Where the 12-season system comes from
Suzanne Caygill introduced personal color seasons to mainstream American style in the 1940s, later popularized by Carole Jackson's 1980 bestseller Color Me Beautiful. Caygill's original four seasons worked — but split along only one axis (warm/cool). The modern 12-season system, developed by Sci\ART and refined by colorists like Christine Scaman, added depth and contrast axes so three signals decide your type, not one. That's why Cool Summer and Soft Summer look nothing alike despite both being "summer."
Every one of the 12 seasons is a combination of depth × undertone × contrast. There's no subjectivity about which one you are — there's just the question of reading the signals correctly, which is what personal color analysis (done in person with fabric drapes, or instantly with AI) does.

Spring
Warm · Light to medium · Clear
Springs look best in warm, saturated, sunlit colors — peach, coral, turquoise, golden yellow. Skin has a peachy or golden undertone; eyes are often warm green, hazel, or blue with a warm rim.
Summer
Cool · Light to medium · Soft
Summers belong in cool, gentle, dusty pastels — rose, periwinkle, soft plum, powder blue. Skin is cool-rosy or cool-neutral; eyes are muted blue, grey-green, or soft hazel.
Autumn
Warm · Medium to deep · Muted
Autumns wear warm, earthy, textured colors — rust, olive, mustard, warm teal, camel. Skin has a warm-neutral or warm undertone; eyes are often warm brown, hazel, or deep green.
Winter
Cool · Medium to deep · High contrast
Winters carry cool, clear, high-contrast jewel tones — emerald, sapphire, true red, magenta, pure black. Skin is cool or cool-neutral; eyes are often sharply colored against dark hair.
